Spring is finally here! Nature is bursting with life everywhere you look and it feels exciting to shift into longer, warmer days. Inspired by the heady days of spring, here are 7 tips to help you naturally supercharge your skincare routine for flawless skin.
Skincare Starts Within
Beautiful skin starts from within. A big part of taking care of the skin on your face and body is to help support your digestive system flush out excess and build up your skin’s protective barrier.
Healthy habits – eating well, exercising, and sleeping – are the backbone of good spring skincare. Topical treatments will only go so far if you aren’t getting the nutrients and fatty acids you need to build up your skin’s protective barrier from inside your body.
7 Ways to Update Your Skincare Routine
Below are 7 tips to update your skin care routine for optimal beauty and wellness. Let’s dive in!
1. Cut out inflammatory foods.
Take a quick mental category of the foods you primarily eat during a week. We tend to indulge in starchy comfort food and sweets over winter, so taking a clean break to reset and recalibrate the body can be incredibly powerful.
For one week, cut out all alcohol, caffeine, dairy, processed sugar, wheat, and processed foods from your diet. Good is better than perfect! Even a few days of cutting back or eliminating inflammatory and processed foods from your diet can help regulate your body’s internal functions and boost your mood.
As you take a break from inflammatory foods, you’ll start feeding your body with cleansing and vibrant foods and healthy fats.
2. Feed your skin.
Eat lots of brightly colored fruits and vegetables, fermented foods, and organic eggs and butter or ghee. Stick to non-glutenous grains like quinoa, buckwheat and millet, and incorporate healthy fats from avocados, olive oil as salad dressing, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. Focus on what’s in season and foods that support your body’s internal cleansing, like spring lettuces, arugula, asparagus, beet kvass, radishes, celery and bright herbs.
Hydration is critical. Start every day with a large glass of water, either plain or with a squeeze of lemon, and sip on water throughout the day.
3. Wear sunscreen!
Make sunscreen a daily part of your spring skincare routine. SPF is your greatest weapon against aging skin and wrinkles.
Make sure to pick a broad-spectrum sunscreen that will protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays. Check out my list of the best natural broad spectrum sunscreens for your face, hands, and neck.
4. Switch skincare products for the season.
As warm weather approaches, it’s time to phase out heavier creams and switch to a lighter moisturizer. My absolute favorite moisturizer for spring and summer weather is the Evan Healy Light Moisture Replenishing Fluid. I also like to use pure freshly cut aloe as a natural moisturizer to add light hydration to skin.
For dry winter skin, incorporate an enzyme-based exfoliant a few times a week to gently remove dead skin cell buildup.
5. Practice face massage.
In conjunction with feeding the body with healthy fats and antioxidants, stimulating touch on our facial skin promotes a healthy ecosystem at the skin’s surface. Face massage supports circulation and increased nutrient supply, plus it feels super amazing!
Take a few minutes in the morning or at night to gently massage your face in an upward and outward motion, focusing on the forehead, cheekbones, jawline, and neck.
6. Detox with a clay mask.
We use a lot of heavy creams and oils during winter, and over time, oil starts to build up in our pores. As it gets warmer, our bodies naturally start producing more oil, making spring the perfect time to indulge in a gently detoxifying clay mask.
Pure french green clay is a gentle and effective mask that has a gentle tightening effect that helps draw out impurities and leave skin feeling refreshed. If you’re skin is sensitive, a white clay is an excellent gentle option.
7. Exercise.
Time to bring out those dance moves! Exercise and increased blood circulation will help keep your skin looking its best. Exercise also warms the body and helps keep the digestive system functioning optimally.
To create more energetic flow for spring, add cardio and aerobic exercises. Yoga, and deep breathing in general, is an excellent method of supporting your lymphatic health and give your skin an extra inner glow.
Natural and Holistic Skincare for Flawless Skin
By following these seven tips, and with a bit of dedication and patience, you’ll soon notice an increase in your awareness of the health of skin and body. Updating your skincare routine for the seasons is all about supporting your body with proper rest, food and exercise to build up a strong and flourishing barrier against the elements. Take a break from inflammatory foods, add more skin nourishing fats and antioxidants to your diet and notice the changes you feel and see in your skin. Remember to use gentle products and moisturizers, stay hydrated, and wear SPF or cover up when you’ll be in the direct sunlight.
Cheers to glowing healthy skin!
